At its now annual fall hardware event in Seattle, Amazon announced that its Alexa voice assistant will get multilingual support in India starting next month. This means Alexa users will be able to seamlessly switch between Hindi and English as part of their general conversation instead of manually going into the settings to change their language preferences. The announcement comes just a month after Amazon announced Hindi language support for Alexa.
Amazon is notably rolling out multilingual support globally. Just like India is getting support for Hindi and English, Alexa users in the US will be able to access English and Spanish, while users in Canada will be able to switch between Canadian English and French as and when they like – without going into settings.
The move is primarily geared towards homes where more than one language is part of communication. “With billions of people in the world speaking more than one language, many homes are not homogenous when it comes to languages anymore," the company said in a blog post.
“Starting next month, customers will be able to switch between English and Hindi when talking to Alexa. For example, if a customer asks for the weather in Hindi, Alexa will reply in Hindi, example “Alexa, aaj mausam kaisa hai?” and when they ask for information in English, Alexa will understand and respond in English example "Alexa, tell me about Chandrayaan-2". This multi-lingual mode can be useful in Indian households where users speak both Hindi and English.”
Alexa won’t be the only voice assistant doing multilingual though. In fact, one can say that it is only playing catch up with Google now. The Google Assistant got multilingual support in India last year.
At its now annual fall hardware event, Amazon also announced a slew of hardware for the Indian market including the Echo third generation and Echo Dot with clock, and what is its most premium high-end smart speaker to date, aka the Echo Studio.
